Make your iPhone as secure as you can

Make sure all your devices are locked up with a passcode. It sounds simple but a lot of us avoid doing so if our iPad is just for use around the house. Make it something you’ll remember, but complex enough no one else can guess it.

Setting your passcode

iOS devices give you the option to use a 6-digit passcode so it’s trickier for thieves to figure out. This can be done in the ‘Passcode’ section in your settings.

For super security, change this passcode regularly or use an alphanumeric code (a combination of letters and numbers). If you want some guidance on how to create a strong password, have a look at our secure passwords guide.

Two-factor authentication

Turning on adds another layer of security, to make sure your account can only be accessed by you. A 6-digit verification code will be sent to your trusted devices, like your iPhone or iPad, when you sign into your account from a new device.

How do you enable it?

Select iCloud in your phone’s settings

Tap ‘Password & security’

Slide ‘Two-factor authentication’ to ON.

Now anyone else who might try to log in to your Apple account won’t be able to do so without the verification code, even if they found out your passcode.

Changing the settings of your notifications can stop iMessages and emails coming through on your locked screen and allowing the person next to you to see any messages you’re sent.

How to hide your message previews

Open ‘Settings’

Tap on ‘Notifications’

Select ‘Messages’

Slide ‘Show Preview’ to OFF.

It might be tempting to select ‘remind me later’ when you get asked to update your phone’s settings, but it’s important to keep your iOS and apps updated to help protect your device from security threats.

How to check for updates

In your settings, select ‘Software update’ to make sure your iOS is updated. For apps, go to the App Store and select ‘Updates’ to check they’re up-to-date. As well as keeping your phone secure, you’ll get any improvements and new features.

Avoid typing in any sensitive information into your device if you’re using public Wi-Fi. Because these are open to the public, this can make them easier for fraudsters to hack and attempt to get hold of your personal information. 

Using your mobile network (3G or 4G) instead of a public connection is a safer way to connect to the internet when out and about, but there are lots of extra steps you can take to protect your data online .

Some scammers can attempt to access your data via Bluetooth, so having your Bluetooth turned off whilst not in use is a good way to maintain your security.

Your Bluetooth can be turned off completely by going into your iPhone’s settings, rather than just tapping the button in your control centre.
